Brief Encounter - David Lean (1945)

When women were dissaproved of smoking in the street and love could be a violent emotion. Mythical film by David Lean with the collaboration of Noël Coward (screenplay) and Sergei Rachmaninoff (music, yes). Trains in the mist, bells and whistles, a man and a woman. It could happen to you. Love appears in the middle of the routine, and who wouldn't sympathize?. To be so happy and then so miserable. The final scene, not in the original play, is a kind of lenitive for sensitive souls.

Exit Ghost - Philip Roth

Nathan Zuckerman is back in town. I mean, he's back in the big city, New York. There he faces the present and the past and even takes a look at the future. Nathan, or Philip, or both, is now a "no longer". Basically he's no longer young, but just the same and in spite of his mind beginning to forget about telephone calls and things and places, he masters as usual the english language (a word I learnt: Valedictorian, first of the class, final speaker at the graduation ceremony). Rojo y negro - Stendhal

El título original lleva artículos (le rouge et le noir) y parece que se refiere a los colores de una casaca del ejército y de una sotana, respectivamente. Los ciento ochenta años que nos separan no han pasado en balde y es difícil entender la lógica de aquella sociedad. Julián Sorel quiere destacar y se mete seminarista (o le meten), lo que no es obstáculo para sus amores. No sé si es la traducción o los años citados, pero el caso es que muchas frases me han resultado inextricables. Stendhal retrata la sicología de sus personajes, que resultan contradictorios (o sea que acierta). Me ha parecido una protonovela, un buen intento cuando aún no había mucha costumbre de elaborarlas. Al final los acontecimientos se precipitan...
