All Happy Families - Hervé Le Tellier

Family memories of the author, an unhappy family it appears. Written when that family can't take notice because they are dead or insane (this last in the case of her mother, although as recounted here, she was crazy from the beginning). The writing is brilliant, or the English translation is in any case.

Eleberri honen kontakizunak ia mende bat hartzen du. Pertsonaia asko daude, eta horregatik batzutan konexioetan gal gaitezke. Batez ere emakumeen bizitzen gorabeherak kontatzen zaizkigu. Maitasuna eta bere falta dira narrazioaren ardatza. Denok dakigun historia sozial eta politikoa berkontatzen da baina ikuspegi berezi batetik. Hitz zail batzuetatik aparte (niretzat) gustura irakurtzen den prosa. 

El amante - Marguerite Duras

Cincuenta años después de los hechos se animó Duras a escribir sobre aquella relación de su adolescencia que, supongo, marcó toda su vida posterior. Lo cuenta de forma convulsa, con ramificaciones narrativas sobre su historia familiar, que fue problemática. El amante, el futuro heredero de un rico empresario de origen chino, le sacaba doce años, mucho y no tanto, según se mire.

Tomás Nevison - Javier Marías

Dice el autor que esta novela no es continuación sino más bien pareja de la anterior, Berta Isla. Mi impresión es que se trata de otra entrega de la ya larga serie de sus peculiares novelas de espías oxonienses. Salpimentada con sus habituales citas eruditas y con sus recurrentes y envolventes razonamientos en torno a la identidad, el pasado, el mal, los afectos... sobre la condición humana al fin y al cabo. Se me ha hecho largo.

Klara and the Sun - Kazuo Ishiguro

Klara is an AF, Artificial Friend, and the narrator of this story. This is science fiction that deals with issues of today, or issues that will soon have to be addressed. I've noticed some relation with that previous novel "Never Let Me Go". How we live, that's the main theme, also loneliness, and sadness, perhaps Ishiguro's watermark.

Tiempos recios - Mario Vargas Llosa

El hecho central de esta novela es la tremenda injusticia histórica (años 50) que sufrió Jacobo Árbenz y a la vez, y sobre todo, el pueblo de Guatemala cuando fue obligado a exiliarse para dar paso a una, otra más, dictadura militar auspiciada por los Estados Unidos. También es una especie de spin-off de la "La fiesta del chivo". Todo contado con la solvencia habitual del autor.

After Rain - William Trevor

Nice collection of stories by this irish author at his best. The time is the last decade of the twentieth century and the scene is mainly small towns in Ireland. Humble people dealing with the usual tragedies of life. Trevor's pen describes feelings and situations beautifully.
