The Fixer - Bernard Malamud

Fixer is a profession, that person who takes care of any broken thing, a window, a table, a tap. This fixer is also a jew in tsarist Russia just before the first world war. The novel narrates the quite kafkian story of his imprisonment, accused of a horrible crime basically for being a jew among gentiles. Beautifully written, it won the Pulitzer prize.
