The Children's Hour - William Wyler (1961)

This is a remake of another film (These Three) directed by Wyler back in 36, and it's based in a playwright written by Lillian Hellman (who personally helps with the screenplay). It's a drama in black and white with two young and beautiful Audrey Hepburn and Shirley McLaine in the main roles. I have liked it, maybe (in part) because the sound is really good and the spelling of the acting crew great. The story is about gossip and, fortunately, couldn't possibly happen in the same terms nowadays. Audrey is as elegant as ever.

Tres habitaciones en Manhattan - Georges Simenon

Esta novela está escrita en 1946 y en aquellos años Simenon se encontraba efectivamente en Estados Unidos (primera regla, escribe sobre lo que conoces). Los protagonistas, sin embargo, son europeos (se sigue aplicando la primera regla). Como otras traducciones del francés me ha resultado algo extraña; no acabo de entender del todo. Claro que puede ser que no sea problema de idioma sino de tema: La relación entre dos seres humanos de distinto sexo (¿será amor?).

Un hombre serio - Hermanos Coen (2009)

"Cuando la verdad resulta falsa y todas las alegrías en tu interior mueren, ¿no quieres alguien a quien amar?". La fuerza de la voz de Grace Slick llevó esta inquietante canción (Somebody To Love) de Jefferson Airplane al número cinco de las listas en 1967. Joel y Ethan Coen tenían entonces trece y diez años y crecían en Minnesota. Esta película es una comedia negra sobre una familia judía de aquella época y en aquel lugar, que se inspira lejanamente en el libro de Job. La he visto subtitulada en castellano y me han parecido importantes las voces originales. Gran guión, buen ritmo narrativo y buen humor. El adolescente es, por supuesto, pelirrojo y con gafas. Los Coen no defraudan, y ya están preparando la siguiente: Un remake del western "Valor de ley".

Datu adierazgarri bat: Bere haurtzaroan, Usparitxa hauzoan, zazpi familien artean, 18 urte azpiko ume ta gazteak 42 ziren. Kartzelan egon zen Balendin guda ta gero, non eta Puerto de Santa Marian. Nire aitite izandakoa ere han zegoen. Elkar ezagutu zutela pentsatzen dut. Hogeigarren mendeko hasieran nolakoa zen bizitza Bizkaiko herritxo batean jakiteko balio dezake liburu honek (eta Enbeitatarren berri edukitzeko, noski).

The Hurt Locker - Kathryn Bigelow (2009)

This film took off as an independent one and right now is among the favorites for this year's Oscars. It's a war thriller about a bomb squad in Iraq, and the fruit of the work of an embedded journalist in the US Army. The action scenes are realistic in a movie sense. I mean, war is terrible and people die all the same or even easier than in a film, but we want to watch drama, and life (and war) is just plain. Same to be said about the main character drawed as a modern cowboy who lights a cigarette after his wild performance. The general atmosphere is accurate: The tension the soldiers undergo, the lack of communication with iraqi people, the desolate scenery. The title seems to refer to military slang meaning "tough times".

El fútbol a sol y sombra - Eduardo Galeano

Una observación que se hace en este libro y que me ha llamado la atención es que la Historia (no sé si uso bien la mayúscula, pero se entiende, ¿no?) lo obvia completamente. Y sin embargo cabría suponer que, por ejemplo, el hecho de que la selección de Brasil haya ganado cinco campeonatos mundiales ha tenido influencia en el desarrollo de aquella sociedad. Galeano es uruguayo y deja asomar la nostalgia del "Maracanazo", cuando en 1950 Uruguay ganó la final del mundial a Brasil ante 200.000 espectadores en la cancha carioca. No es un libro estadístico; se trata de repasar a grandes trazos la evolución del fútbol desde el amateurismo original (jugar por el placer de jugar) hasta el profesionalismo actual. El autor se muestra partidario de gambeteos y firuletes (florituras).
