Demon Copperhead - Barbara Kingsolver

This modern-day adaptation of Dickens' David Copperfield won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction last year. It's a coming-of-age novel with a message about rural Appalachian society plus the scandal of legally prescribed addictive painkillers with nefarious consequences. It is vividly and expressively narrated in the first person by the Demon of the title.
