The Night Watchman - Louise Erdrich

Almost seventy years have passed since the events narrated in this novel. The attemp to "terminate" with a number of indian reservations, including the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa. The author is a member of this tribe and her grandfather was the leader who argued against that termination. We learn  about the Indian way of life in an entertaining novel with some touches of magical realism.

Este libro es una especie de producto secundario de la biografía de Kafka escrita por el autor. Incluye textos y anécdotas poco conocidas. Vale para hacerse una idea de como fue la vida del famoso autor judío/checo.

Hormigón - Thomas Bernhard

Obsesiva narración, sin puntos y aparte, en primera persona de un Rudolph que, según dice el traductor Miguel Sáenz en el prólogo, es sin duda un psicópata. Su enfermedad, su hermana, la casa donde vive, el libro que quiere escribir pero algo se lo impide, son temas que muerde una y otra vez hasta agotarlos. Al final cambia un tanto el registro.

Metroland - Julian Barnes

Barnes's first novel with a strong autobiographical charge, I think. It could have been three novellas, the adolescence in Metroland (a suburb of London), the student in Paris and the young family man back in Metroland. He's still not the exquisite writer he's become, but he's good enough just the same.

La buena letra - Rafael Chirbes

La historia de una familia humilde de las que perdieron la Guerra Civil (bien) escrita desde el punto de vista de una mujer. El escenario es un pueblo no muy lejos de Misent, el escenario ficticio habitual de Chirbes. Hay paralelismos con "La plaza del Diamante".

The Books in My Life - Henry Miller

Miller writes about the books that had the most influence on him. There are plenty of them even if he claims he is not much of a reader. There's a lot of autobiographical stuff. His tastes are not strictly literary, he prefers the message, he loves to read everything that clarifies life and death with a strong inclination towards esotericism. There's a list with a hundred references at the end.

Totelak - Fermin Etxegoien

Zoritxarrez euskaldunok gero eta joera haundiago dugu horrelakoak izateko, totelak. Hau da, zentzu figuratuan. Baina hori, euskararen patua, ez da liburuaren gai nagusia. Musika dugu gai hori. Pop musika eta herri musika (azken batean, gauza bera). Eleberriz mozorrotutako saiakera iruditzen zait. Prosa bizia eta aberatsa, ondo egina!

Vivir no es tan divertido, y envejecer, un coñazo - Oscar Tusquets Blanca

Cerca de cumplir los ochenta años el autor habla con sensatez sobre su experiencia de envejecer. Antes hace un resumen de su vida, durante la que hasta el momento parece que se ha divertido mucho, así que el título no solo es demasiado largo sino también inexacto. 

Trio - William Boyd

There are actually three stories in this novel, two of them quite related and the third, Elfrida's, only remotely. Putting it too simply, there are also three themes: alcoholism, the half-hidden sexual identity and the world around the cinema. Pretty entertaining all the time as usual with Boyd.

La plaza del Diamante - Mercè Rodoreda

La vida de Natalia, una mujer humilde de Barcelona, contada por ella misma. Desde la aparente candidez de una protagonista sin más cultura que la popular su prosa es inspirada, y a ratos poética. Vale como crónica histórica y sirve además para denunciar la opresión añadida por ser mujer.
