Padres e hijos - Ivan Turguenev

Hace 160 años en algún lugar de Rusia y como siempre los jóvenes desplazaban a los "viejos", aunque alguno de estos tuviera poco más de cuarenta años. Estupenda novela que acompaña a un puñado de hombres y mujeres en sus vicisitudes.  Favorecidos por el destino, hay que añadir; a su alrededor los campesinos apenas si eran unos seres semovientes.

Sánchez, Gordo de feria - Esther García Llovet

Doble entrega de la autora, dos novelas cortas en su estilo pop efervescente. Me ha gustado más la primera, Sánchez, una historia de pequeños timadores que se buscan la vida en Madrid, en un entorno urbano descuidado que lo mismo podría ser Ciudad de México o Los Ángeles.

Intimations - Zadie Smith

Some essays Smith has written in 2020, during the early days of the pandemic. She's herself, funny and sharp, in her appreciation of  the influence the virus had on our lives. A little book whose profits she has dedicated to charity.

The Counterlife - Philip Roth

This a kind of omnibus novel that tells a story about Nathan Zuckerman and his brother Henry, a dentist, in several parallel universes. Nathan is one of the author's alter egos and once again Roth faces his ghosts: being Jewish, writing, family, male-female relationships. And he does it brilliantly, even if  it's exhausting at times.

Haize-lekuak - Amaia Telleria

Amonaren bizipenak kontatzen ditu idazleak, baserritik Altsasura neskame lana egitera joan zenekoak. Urtea 1939 zen eta xaloak bezain krudelak izan ziren garai haiek xarmaz marrazten ditu, modu guztiz naturalean. Erraz irakurtzen eta disfrutatzen den eleberria.

El poeta que rugió a la luna y se convirtió en tigre - Atsushi Nakajima

El del título es uno de los ocho cuentos que completan el libro. Nakajima murió a los 33 años y no tuvo tiempo de "consagrarse". Sus historias tienen un aire culto y fantástico y recuerdan a las de Borges, o se debería decir al revés, ya que es anterior. Se intuye la dificultad para traducirlo del japonés.

The Dove's Nest and Other Stories - Katherine Mansfield

A collection of stories published after Mansfield's death, including some incomplete. As vivid as ever, her energetic writing portrays British society as it was a century ago. Here we are some of her best stories, like "The Doll's House" or "The Canary". Masterpieces, dare I say.

Padre e hijo, los dos Guastavinos. La clave es el nombre, me parece, otro cualquiera no hubiera aguantado el tirón. Esta es una pequeña biografía que relata los hechos esenciales y deja preguntas en el aire que no se pueden responder nunca, en realidad. El misterio de las bóvedas mediterráneas en América.

The Ministry of Utmost Happiness - Arundathi Roy

20 years after her first novel, this is the author's new one. In the meantime, she has written a lot of non-fiction about social causes. All of these causes appear, I think, here too, in this broad picture of India and the incredible chaos it seems to be. The rawness of it all is sweetened by a sentimental coat of love and affection.

Cambiar de idea - Aixa de la Cruz

Supongo que la autora sabe que hay otro libro (reseñado en este blog) del mismo título de Zadie Smith. Aquí se mezcla la autoficción más biográfica, lo que más me ha gustado, con otros capítulos de ficción militante, que rozan el ensayo, sobre los temas que le preocupan. 

Slaughterhouse-Five - Kurt Vonnegut

The Children's Crusade is the novel's alternate title, which means that wars are usually fought by very young men, a crime in itself. Vonnegut was in Dresden, as a prisoner, when the city was destroyed in World War II. A satirical novel against the war and also a critical point of view of American society of the time. Not that things have changed much in the last fifty years.
