Winesburg, Ohio - Sherwood Anderson
They used horses then in that imagined little town not far from lake Erie. It was a hundred years ago and the range of stories about people mostly feeling miserable were told in a renewing way back then, a modernist way they say. One skeptical narrator tells us about young people dreaming of love and life out of town if possible and grown people dragging loneliness and hopelessness along their way. A bit depressing.
