The Mask of Dimitrios - Eric Ambler

Best known work of the author, who's said to have been given a new realism to spy novels. Nowadays (it was written in 1939) that "new" appears antic. The plot goes to and fro in that long ago gone Europe of the interwar period. There's also an old film by Jean Negulesco with Peter Lorre (who else!).
