Aura - Carlos Fuentes

Breve novela aclamada como uno de los hitos del realismo mágico. A mí me ha parecido un cuento gótico, bien escrito y novedoso en 1962, pero que hoy deja una impresión de "déjà vu".

Gran despliegue de irises en technicolor (es un decir) en este drama de tecnoficción o thriller paranormal que toca varios temas siempre de modo inteligente. Es el segundo esfuerzo creativo de Mike Cahill tras "Otra Tierra", donde también lo hacía casi todo (director, escritor, productor y editor).

The Shipping News - Annie Proulx

Pulitzer prize in 1993; the main character, one Quoyle, returns to the land of his ancestors, Newfoundland (Terranova). A harsh island to live in, a soil (meaning rock) nobody would had put the foot on in the first place, wasn't it for the amount of fish. And that is changing now, we are told. Quite a lot of terrible things happen and we're driven through them in the best way possible, humorously.

Magic in the Moonlight - Woody Allen (2014)

Last year Allen picture full of sharp script and beautiful imagery (the Riviera in the 1920s). It's mostly dialogue, with british irony and accuracy on one side (Colin Firth) and american naturalness on the other (Emma Stone). The backbone of the story is the match (meeting or clash) between reason and love.

Breve libro del escritor checo afincado en Francia. No lo he entendido, mi culpa. Mi problema con el idioma de Moliere o con las vanguardias de la literatura, tal vez. Se lee sin problemas y entretiene más a ratos (las presuntas anécdotas del Politburo).

Las viudas de los jueves - Claudia Piñeiro

El micromundo de una urbanización de lujo (el "country") que sirve como aproximación a la historia reciente argentina. Un relato coral (o, mejor dicho, una serie de relatos) en un libro al que no se sabe por qué adjudican la etiqueta de "policial". Buena prosa con buenos retratos psicológicos.

Masters of Sex - Thomas Maier

This is the book the tv serie is based in. Doctor Masters and not-graduated (a point much insisted) Virginia Johnson completed a superb team who accomplished a revolutionary research in the field of sexual phisiology and therapy. A remarkable case of synergy and a well written biography.
