There's quite a lot of stories in this book —originally written in Yiddish— by a Nobel Prize-winning author. Many of them portray Jewish life in old Poland. but there are also wordly tales about those same people as inmigrants in the United States. The writing is vivid, humorous, powerful and entertaining.
