The Noise of Time - Julian Barnes

That noise is said here to be deafening; a way of talking appropriate if the subject is a musician, russian composer Shostakovich. And the gist of the novel is his difficult, tense, excruciating relationship with soviet power. Human fortitude and frailty combined in this lifelong confrontation masterly depicted by Mr Barnes.
