The first novel published, in 1939, by the prolific British writer. It is a straightforward, unadorned gangster story inspired by the real-life case of Ma Baker. Dialogue abounds, characters are poorly constructed and a considerable number of people get shot.

Diez cuentos publicados en un semanario, en París, en plena guerra civil. El editor se los adjudica a Chaves pero hay dudas. Algunos me han gustado más y otros no tanto. El epílogo explicatorio del editor resulta excesivo.

A collection of stories that have failed to catch my interest. Disheartened characters move through life and the narrative leans towards the strange and the bizarre. Williams has a comand of language but her style is not to my taste.

Libro de investigación periodística sobre un caso de falsa identidad nacido en internet que continuó con éxito durante años en la vida real. El autor se incluye en la trama y le da un toque literario, aunque a ratos se le enrevesan un tanto las frases.

Young at heart she is, truly. She wrote these compelling stories already in her nineties, yet with remarkable mastery. The Jewish perspective and old age itself are two fundamental pillars of this interesting book.

La palabra mágica - Isabel Allende

Pasados los ochenta Allende escribe sobre toda una vida de escribir. Inevitablemente incluye retazos de su vida personal. Está claro que es una gran contadora de historias. La parte que no me ha convencido del todo es la de los consejos para escribir una novela, que están bien pero si los necesitas, malo.

The Magus - John Fowles

Too long, definitely. This is a psychological thriller in the style of 1960s trends. There are quite a number of pages of very good storytelling and the English language flows brilliantly, but in the end the plot borders on the absurd, I'm afraid. 

Resurrection Walk - Michael Connolly

Mickey Haller —the Lincoln Lawyer— and Harry Bosch: what a powerful team, they know every trick in the book and no murder goes unpunished. This is a courtroom drama full of legal details and unexpected twists. An entertaining read.

Puntobobo - Itxaso Martin Zapirain

La bailarina - Patrick Modiano

Breve novela que no he acabado de entender. Me ha pasado antes con autores franceses. Como acostumbra, Modiano juega la carta de París, las calles y plazas que hay que atravesar para ir de aquí a allá, y recuerda los tiempos en los que frecuentó a la tal bailarina. 

The Progress of Love - Alice Munro

I am at a loss for words to describe Munro's work. So I'll just quote Wikipedia: "Her stories explore human complexities in a simple but meticulous prose style". So it is, and the setting is one or another small town in Huron County, Canada. Fortunately, there are more books by Alice Munro that I haven't read yet.

La Antártica empieza aquí - Benjamín Labatut

Así llaman en Chile a la Antártida. Colección de cuentos anteriores reescritos para esta nueva edición. No se le puede negar al autor una excelente mano para la literatura, pero su tendencia al tremendismo no me convence.
